Seed sprouting is a joyful and educational experience. Sprouting seeds and seeing them grow bring peace and joy to the mind. Not to speak that fresh sprouts contain precious nutritions and fiber that a body needs to remain healthy. The following steps are a general guideline for seed sprouting:

  1. Soaking, pre-sprouting, 4-8 hrs, depending on the type of seeds.
  2. Sprouting, frequent rinsing, 2-3 times a day,
  3. Harvest. serve and enjoy the achievement

Soaking seeds is very critical to the success of growing sprouts. Use any container that holds seeds and fill in water to cover the seeds so that seeds are completed soaked in the water. Most seeds absorb water during this period of time. Normally, it takes about 4-8 hours for the seeds to absorb enough water and germinate. Seeds should be soaked in water at room temperature. Add water to the container if necessary to make sure the seeds are submerged in the water. Most seeds give nice smell during the period. Alafalfa seeds and mung beans give a smell like beer or bread. The smell is quite enjoyable.

After soaking, place the seeds in the sprouter. A sprouter can be as simple as a dish with a stack of paper towel or something like QSprouter's sprouting tray. The key for the sprouter is to have a place to keep the moisture around the seeds and drain water off the seeds. So, whatever it is, make sure the seeds are moisturized but not soaked in water at all. This will maintain the growth of  the seeds and slow down the growth of bacteria and mold. Frequent rinsing is important to keep the seeds clean. Normally, rinsing the seeds thoroughly 2-3 times a day is sufficient for this purpose. Some seeds are rich in protein may give bacteria and mold a good chance to grow if not germinated. In such case, remove those bad seeds away from the sprouting tray when rinsing.

Serving sprouts is always a great thing to do. Some people like the flavor of the whole sprout, leaves (cotyledons), stem and root, some don't. It is recommended to eat the whole sprout for the most possible nutritions. However, for some people, who really don't like the smell or texture of the roots, they can select to remove the roots before serving. Tender sprouts are a good material for salad. Or, adding sprouts to sandwiches for lunch can make it a nutritious and delicious meal. Sprouting seeds at work makes it convenient to use fresh sprouts whenever needed. Besides, sharing extra sprouts with colleagues is also good in promoting healthy living style.

A few things special about sprouting at work are that:

  • Having green/red sprouts at desk, makes it a good scene on the desk. Green sprouts also make the desk top enriched with a strong sense of life spawning. The positive psychological meaning and influence is beyond imagination.
